This is the classic of classic Free games. The game is an open source game, so you can download the source code and even write your own NetHack. NetHack is a text- or ascii based simple game, where you control the character of your choice. You move around in the dungeons, going always deeper and deeper. On your way you fight monsters and collect items that help you, such as weapons and food. You also collect money, and with money you can buy items from stores. The levels are created randomly, so you do not have to play the same levels over and over again. The deeper you go in the dungeon, the harder become your enemies. That is why your character also evolves and gets stronger. This is a real classic, I urge you to try it.
